About the Intensive Care Unit

CHEO delivers specialized care and treatment to critically ill, injured or surgical patients in a 10-bed pediatric intensive care unit. This unit features technologically advanced capabilities, which is essential to the monitoring and treatment of patients.

The following patient populations are served in CHEO’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit:

  • Medical Intensive Care Services
  • Cardiology
  • Central nervous system pathologies (e.g. increased ICP, seizures)
  • Gastrointestinal (including liver failure)
  • Hematology/oncology
  • Metabolic
  • Nephrology (including hemo and peritoneal dialysis and CVVH)
  • Respiratory (infectious and non-infectious) diseases
  • Sepsis
  • Toxic ingestions

Surgical Intensive Care Services:

  • Burns
  • Cardiovascular surgery (open, closed, ECMO)
  • General surgery
  • Genitourinary
  • Neurosurgical
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Otolaryngology
