April 16: Parents of children 9-13 years old

Questions about what to expect from puberty? Wondering how to connect with your child during this important transitional period?

These are just some of the topics that will be explored during this informative session for parents of children 9 - 13 years old. The session will include discussion of potential issues of mental health and the different aspects of a child's life that are affected at this age, such as anxiety, self-esteem and bullying. As well as, there will be a general discussion on emotional intelligence.

Parents will also learn about healthy living - a problem that is facing many pre-teens - from lack of physical activity, nutrition and personal hygiene to body image issues.

Plenary description:

Children’s resilience is improved as they establish and maintain healthy connections to the adults closest to them. The pre-teen years provide a window of opportunity for parents and guardians to strengthen those connections. Dr Ritchie will discuss how to talk with your child, resolve conflict that comes up, and how to stay connected as they approach the teenage years. This presentation will also cover “red flags” to watch for and when to ask for help for your child.

Breakout Sessions:

  • Behaviour and Discipline
  • Puberty and Sexuality
  • Healthy Lifestyle in Early Adolescence
  • Social Development, Bullying and Social Media
