CHEO has given our son the gifts of sight and sound. At 9 months old, our son Archer was diagnosed with bilateral cataracts which were removed during two surgeries by the amazing Dr. Fournier in December 2014 and February 2015.
In the same week that I noticed the white spots covering his pupils, we had begun to question whether or not Archer could hear us properly and booked a routine hearing test at CHEO just to make sure. What happened next was the shock of a lifetime as we were told over the course of two appointments and several tests that Archer was profoundly deaf and that even a jet engine would fail to register sound for our son. When Archer was 13 months old he received his first Cochlear Implant from Dr. Schramm and his team. At 16 months he received his second.
On March 24, 2015 we witnessed our son hearing for the first time when his first implant was activated. From Rita at reception, our therapist Pam, the nurses in ENT... EVERYONE in Audiology and ENT have been invaluable to our journey. Over the past year and a half, they have made sure we knew every step, they surprised us with balloons and bubbles after his surgeries, they have connected us to services that are helping our family learn ASL, but best of all they have helped us teach our son to listen and to speak.
I shared the following video about Archer's journey on the one year anniversary of his activation...I'm happy to share it here as well as a thank you for all that CHEO has done for our son and our family.
