Using Nasal Inhalers and Other Nasal Devices for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia

Using Nasal Sprays

(Flonase®, Rhinocort® Aqua)

Before using the spray:
  • Shake the bottle gently. Remove the cover.
  • If the bottle is new, or you haven't used it in the last couple of days, spray a couple of times into the air (until you see a mist coming out) before use.
  • Gently blow the nose.
  • Close one nostril and put the nozzle in the other nostril.
  • Tilt the head a bit forwards.
  • Start breathing in. Activate the spray while breathing in.
  • Breathe out through the mouth.
  • If a second spray is needed, repeat the above steps; otherwise, repeat these steps for the other nostril (if needed).
The nozzle should be gently pulled off and washed in warm water, then left to dry, daily.

If you develop nose or throat irritation or nose bleeds while using a nasal steroid spray, you should inform your doctor.

Using the Nasal Turbuhaler® (Nasal Dry Powder Inhaler)

(Rhinocort® Turbuhaler®)
  • Blow your nose gently.
  • Unscrew and remove the plastic cover.
  • Hold the turbuhaler® upright. Turn the base to the right as far as it will go, then all the way back until you hear the click.
  • Insert the nozzle into the nostril gently, until you reach a good seal. Close the other nostril.
  • Sniff in, quickly and forcefully.
  • Remove the turbuhaler® before breathing out. Repeat this sequence for the other nostril.
  • Replace the plastic cover after use.
  • When you see a red line in the window on the side of the Turbuhaler®, you have 20 doses of medication left.
Clean the outside of the device with a dry tissue regularly. Never clean the Turbuhaler® with water — it destroys the device!

If you develop nose or throat irritation or nose bleeds while using a nasal steroid spray, you should inform your doctor.

Using the HYDRAsense® Nasal Cleanser

HYDRAsense® Nasal Care comes in four strengths:
  • The Baby Mist produces a fine mist and has a peach nozzle;
  • The Gentle Mist produces a gentle mist, is suitable for children, and has a green nozzle;
  • The Medium Stream produces a continuous stream, is suitable for older children and adolescents, and has a blue nozzle;
  • The Full Stream produces a very vigorous continuous stream and is suitable for adults only. It has a red nozzle.
To use HYDRAsense®:
  • Remove the protective cap;
  • Insert the nasal applicator into the top of the bottle. Press down on the applicator until a small amount of liquid is released;
  • Bend your head slightly forward, over a sink, and tilt your head sideways. Place the nasal applicator in your upper nostril;
  • Press down on the applicator, and let salt water flow through the nasal passages. Continue to clean the nasal passage until clear watery liquid flows out of the lower nostril;
  • Tilt your head sideways in the other direction, and repeat the procedure.
HYDRAsense® can be used 2–4 times per day, as recommended by your doctor.
