Research

To investigate, explore, delve into, examine, submit, and study

Research is a process. It involves formulating questions and pondering many outcomes. It’s about exploring avenues and putting them to the test. It’s asking “how does this work?” and trying to understand how A relates to B. It’s also trying to answer simple questions such as: “What can I do about this?” Or “How can I help?”

Cancer, asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, diabetes, juvenile arthritis, mental health, heart defects, Crohn’s disease, and the list goes on; there are sadly no shortages of illnesses or conditions waiting for cures. And there are no shortages of children hoping that today may be the day that a CHEO researcher finds a treatment or a cure for what ails them.

You want your child to feel better and we do to. Research allows us to focus our time, expertise and money into coming up with answers - real, tangible answers that will affect your child’s daily life – if not today, then tomorrow or in the years to come.

But what does research mean to a parent whose child is currently waging a fight against cancer and who doesn’t have time to wait for tomorrow’s cure? It means that you have smart, engaged, and focused individuals that are looking after your child and doing everything they can to find solutions to make your child feel better and be better! Research is not a sprint, it’s a marathon; and since it has been proven that children who are treated in the context of a research environment receive better care, bringing your child to CHEO is a win-win situation for everyone.

At CHEO we are extremely proud of the calibre of medical talent we attract. It is those physicians who provide the best possible care for our children and participate actively in on-going research initiatives and clinical trials. And since part of CHEO’s mission is to take research findings and translate them into treatments or medication for patients, we take research seriously. Here’s an example:

Canadian pediatricians have found a better way to help babies suffering from a lung infection called bronchiolitis and were able to reduce the number admitted to hospital by more than one-third.
