The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Centre at CHEO provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary team approach to the diagnosis and treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. The Centre is part of CHEO’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

A range of health specialists collaborate and are involved throughout the initial diagnosis and continuing treatment of each IBD patient. These include:

  • Pediatric gastroenterologists

  • Surgeons

  • Radiologists

  • Other pediatric specialists as needed

  • Nurse care managers

  • Psychiatrists and psychologists

  • Dieticians

  • Social workers

  • Researchers

Making a difference and obtaining the overall wellness of each patient is what we strive for every day. The vision of the IBD Centre at CHEO is simple. We want IBD to ultimately mean – “I Beat the Disease!”

As well as providing patient care and family support based on the most current approaches to diagnosis, treatment and long-term management, the Centre conducts basic laboratory research and patient studies in pediatric IBD. The research is conducted both at CHEO and collaboratively with other related institutes and centres.

CHEO researchers have multiple publications in high-level journals. Visit the CHEO IBD Centre Research pages to learn more and view a sample of publications.

Members of the IBD Centre’s team are also invited to make presentations at all the important national and international pediatric and adult gastroenterology meetings.

Education and Training

The IBD Centre is committed to sharing with patients and families its depth of knowledge in the complex and specialized care required for children and young people with IBD.

As part of CHEO’s mandate to extend far outside its walls, the Centre also provides IBD training and education to local health professionals in Ottawa, Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. By working with the broader community of health professionals, we can build an integrated system of care which is especially important as the needs of children and young people with IBD in our broad service area continues to grow.

Through this environment of learning, knowledge transfer and growth for scientists and clinicians - and working together through a multidisciplinary approach - the IBD Center focuses a broad range of resources on optimizing patient outcomes.

The Centre is committed to delivering world-class, quality care through its focus on:

  • Improving patient outcomes

  • Commitment to research and knowledge sharing

  • Developing the next generation of IBD care providers

  • Adopting a multidisciplinary approach

  • Translating evidence-based care into practice

  • Maintaining professional relationships with organizations and industry
