How To Access CHEO Mental Health Services
Emergency Room Visit
Children experiencing a mental health crisis and arriving at the hospital Emergency department will be seen either by a Crisis Intervention Worker or an Emergency room physician. These specialists will provide a medical and psychological assessment. The assessment will determine if the child needs to be immediately admitted to the hospital’s mental health unit, referred to one of CHEO’s outpatient mental health program or referred to a service or specialist in our community.
Hospital and family physician referral
To be referred, a physician must submit the Child and Youth Specialized Psychiatric and Mental Health Services Intake Referral Form
If your child has been referred by CHEO’s emergency department - or a referral has been made by a physician to one of CHEO’s mental health programs - your child’s referral will be received and reviewed by CHEO’s Centralized Intake Service. This service is responsible for reviewing the referral, assessing your child’s needs and determining which type of service is best suited for your child’s immediate needs. You will then be contacted either by phone or mail by your referring physician with information regarding your child’s appointment or information about where and how to get help.
If you have any questions regarding referrals, please contact your physician.
