The Butterfly Garden at CHEO
“For the love of our children”
The butterfly has long been seen as a symbol of transformation. The transition from caterpillar to chrysalis to beautiful winged creature is a wonderful and inspiring metaphor for anyone undergoing a significant life change.
The Butterfly Garden at CHEO is a place for respite and quiet contemplation for patients and their families, providing hope and inspiration in a natural setting. The Butterfly Garden began in 2002 as a joint project between the Ottawa Chapter of The Compassionate Friends and CHEO.
The mission of The Compassionate Friends is to provide peer support and hope for the future to parents and families experiencing the death of a child at any age and from any cause.
Many individuals and organizations have donated their time and talents to building and maintaining the garden. In 2014, it underwent a major rejuvenation to ensure its long-term sustainability.
The Butterfly Garden is located on the small hill behind the helicopter landing pad near the entrance to the CHEO Emergency Department. The entrance pathway is wheelchair accessible and the paved area is used for group gatherings and special events.
