Family Decision Services

Helping Families Make Tough Healthcare Decisions

What are Patient Decision Aids?

Patient decision aids are tools that help people facing difficult decisions when there is more than one reasonable option or there is uncertainty about the best option. Patient decision aids are designed to address specific decisions for specific health conditions. Research shows that patient decision aids help people to:

  • become involved in decision making with their healthcare team
  • get information about potential options, including the benefits, harms and possible outcomes of each option
  • clarify their personal values related to important trade-offs among the various options
  • select the option that fits best with what matters most to them.

The CHEO A to Z Inventory of Pediatric Patient Decision Aids contains links to publicly available patient decision aids which are resources that may be of interest. Most of these websites are not maintained by CHEO. Some are intended for adults but may be relevant for some children and youth. As well, some of the drugs and procedures mentioned in the patient decision aids are not available in Canada.

Often there is not a patient decision aid for the specific decision and health condition under consideration. The Ottawa Family Decision Guide is a tool that can be used by people facing any kind of difficult health or social decision.

Patient decision aids and the Ottawa Family Decision Guide are intended to support counselling from a healthcare professional. Always consult your healthcare professional to see if a particular patient decision aid applies to you and your family.
