Statistics paint a clear portrait that if you or your child are suffering from a mental health disorder you are not alone. Many children and youth struggle with mental health issues. In fact, one in five children and youth has an identifiable mental health disorder and of those, five out of six will never get the help they need. Statistics also indicated that suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10 to 24 years olds.

Here are additional facts from Youth Net / Réseau Ado (YN/RA) Ottawa research data. YN/RA is a bilingual regional mental health promotion and intervention program at CHEO run by youth, for youth.

  • 72.9% of female teens said that they feel really stressed

  • 47.9% of female youth said that they feel really depressed

  • 31.3% of female teens had thoughts of suicide in the past, while 16.1% had attempted suicide in the past

  • 17.7% of male teens had thoughts of suicide in the past, while 7.1% had attempted suicide in the past

  • 45.3% of male teens and 32.3% of female youth never admitted these thoughts or feelings
