CHEO President and CEO Steps Down, CHEO Begins Executive Search

Drawing towards the end of his five-year term, Michel Bilodeau, the president and chief executive officer of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), has decided to step down when his contract expires in November. He made the announcement yesterday at CHEO’s monthly board meeting.

“After 41 years in the workforce, including 31 years in hospitals, I have decided it is time for me to slow down,” said Bilodeau. “The staff and physicians at CHEO are very passionate about that they do, unlike anything I have seen before. I am very proud to have been a part of that, and will continue to cheer them on, albeit from afar, with great enthusiasm.”

The five years of Bilodeau’s tenure have been the busiest in CHEO’s history with higher occupancy rates, more surgeries, record-high emergency and outpatient visits, and an H1N1 pandemic. Under Bilodeau’s leadership, the hospital was able to continually balance the budget without layoffs or service reductions, even adding a new critical care wing, modernizing IT systems, expanding clinic space, enhancing patient safety and securing additional program funding, such as for cochlear implants, obesity, diabetes, and eating disorders.

"We thank Michel for his strong and definitive leadership during what was a challenging period in CHEO's history," said Johanne Levesque, chair of CHEO's Board of Trustees. "He will leave behind a stronger and more efficient hospital, that retains its capacity for caring and deep connections to the community it serves."

Bilodeau’s contract expires in November. The Board of Trustees will begin recruitment for his successor.
