June 13th Deadline of Let’s Keep Kids Out of Hospital Awards Approaches

June 7, 2011

The June 13th deadline for CHEO’s Let’s Keep Kids Out of Hospital Awards is fast approaching. Do you know a coach, teacher, program or organization who should be nominated for the $1,500 prize? Please spread the word!

The aim of the Let’s Keep Kids Out of Hospital Awards is to acknowledge those who make a difference in the lives of children and youth. The award can recognize a program, a business or simply an individual who has given their time and gone that extra mile in the betterment of the lives and health of young people.

There are four areas in which applicants may chose to apply, but they must do so by June 13th. These areas include injury prevention, mental health, healthy active living and obesity, as well as family poverty. The types of people that could be awarded are teachers involved in after-school programs, sports coaches, volunteer organizations, community groups, advocate lobbyists, health service providers, volunteer organizations, health or social service agencies, even a company with a special volunteer or corporate citizenship program targeted specifically at children’s health and wellness.

At CHEO it is believed that the best prescription for good health is prevention. Specifically prevention of those four key areas that often lead to childhood illness and hospitalization: injury, obesity, mental health and family poverty.

“CHEO knows that many individuals, programs, organizations and businesses in the community not only share our approach, but also make important contributions to addressing these issues,” said Chantal Courchesne, a member of both the CHEO Board of Trustees and Advocacy Committee. “The Let’s Keep Kids Out of Hospital Awards is a formal, annual program created to recognize initiatives that go ‘above and beyond’ in addressing one of the root causes and, in doing so, raise awareness and inspire others.”

Those successful applicants will be awarded with not only a commemorative plaque, but also a monetary reward of $1,500 that is slated for re-investment into the winning program. Visit the CHEO website today to submit your application before it is too late!
