Ottawa’s first organ donation workplace initiative wraps up with success
The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) is pleased to announce it has successfully reached its goal in Ottawa’s first Trillium Gift of Life “Gift of 8” workplace initiative. CHEO exceeded its target of 750 visits to the “Gift of 8” registration site.

On September 14, CHEO launched the first “Gift of 8” workplace movement in Ottawa, a registration drive with a simple ask to register to be an organ and tissue donor. For two weeks CHEO invited employees to register their consent to organ and tissue donation or check their registration status in hopes to raise awareness and encourage more people to register.

“CHEO and its employees are always committed to doing their part in the community. We are very pleased with the campaign results and extremely proud of the support and commitment of our staff and volunteers to saving lives in Ontario,” said Dr. Sonny Dhanani, Chief Medical Officer for Organ Donation at Trillium Gift of Life and CHEO Gift of 8 Workplace campaign chair.

The “Gift of 8” Movement Workplace initiative was designed to address the disconnect between intention and action.

CHEO employee Melanie Joanette is extremely pleased with results of the campaign and CHEO’s commitment to this cause. Knowing first hand the importance of being a registered donor, she lives every day with kidney failure and is waiting for a kidney donor.

“Registering to be a donor is the greatest gift you can give to someone like me. Thank you to all who registered to be a donor. Every donation counts as it has the potential to save more than just one life,” said Joanette.
Every three days someone dies in Ontario because the life-saving organ transplant they need is not available, yet less than 25 percent of Ontarians have registered their consent to be a donor. Roughly, 1,500 people in Ontario are waiting for organ transplants and the thousands more waiting for tissue transplants.

CHEO strongly encourages other organizations in Ottawa to launch a workplace campaign and for friends and families to register.

Registering your consent for organ and tissue donation can be done online in just two minutes, by visiting CHEO’s page at .
