CHEO's new healing garden to help kids be their healthiest
April 22nd, 2013 – Ottawa – In celebration of Earth Day, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) is breaking ground to create a new outdoor Healing Garden. The garden, to be planted across 1,000 sq. ft. just east of the Garry Cardiff Wing will provide a therapeutic space that promotes healing, relaxation and sustainability for CHEO patients, their families and individuals visiting the hospital.

The Hellenic Community Association of Ottawa has generously donated $25,000 to the project. “The Hellenic community of Ottawa has been supporting CHEO by hosting their annual hike for Cheo for the past 21 years, raising over $465,000 to date. It is with great excitement that the Hike for CHEO Committee of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa pledges $25,000 as a philanthropic gift towards CHEO's Healing Earth Garden”, said Tassy Vassilyadi, member of the Hellenic Community Association of Ottawa.

Studies have shown links between healing gardens and patients’ ability to manage pain and heal. A garden can also be a therapeutic tool for teaching patients how to deal with physical challenges as they transition into the community. Gardens can speed healing from surgery, muscle pain, stress or other ailments and can help kids develop gross and fine motor skills.

“The garden is a natural fit with CHEO’s mandate to help kids and families be their healthiest,” said Dr. Matthew Bromwich, CHEO surgeon and chair of the Sustainability Committee “It will engage the body and educate the senses, the mind and the imagination. A healing garden embodies and espouses the belief that health and nature are inextricably intertwined.”

The garden will include a vegetable patch, activity areas for children to play and learn and common areas where individuals can simply sit, relax and renew energy.

Maintenance of the healing garden will be a collaborative effort between CHEO’s Sustainability Committee, members of the community and CHEO staff and patients.

The healing garden is an initiative of the CHEO Sustainability Committee; a group committed to driving sustainability in healthcare.
