CHEO volunteer of the year helps the medicine go down
OTTAWA (ONTARIO), MAY 26, 2013—Eight volunteers, including two university students, have been rewarded for their hundreds of hours helping kids and families feel better while receiving care at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

At a ceremony last week, 78-year-old Doreen Hewlett was named Volunteer of the Year by the Volunteer Association of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario for her outstanding contributions to CHEO. Every week since 1997, she has given her time to teach sewing and knitting, help with fundraising events and support children of all ages in CHEO’s Child Life Services.

The Volunteer Association also handed out its annual student bursaries of $2,000 each to two student volunteers. To be eligible, students must invest a minimum of 100 hours at CHEO and outline how they will give back to their communities.

Nishaan Brar is studying Biomedical Science at the University of Ottawa and working as a Research Assistant at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. He is hoping to become a neurosurgeon.

Pam Ng is studying Life Sciences at the University of Toronto with a wish to pursue a career in the health field. She is a talented musician who has brought her music to the children at the hospital.

The Association recognized five volunteers for their long years of service: Judy Reaume and Johanna Thomas (45 years), Ruth Altherr and Ruth Smith (35 years), and Renée Auger (25 years).

The awards ceremony took place at CHEO on May 22, 2013.

The Volunteer Association of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario has existed since 1965 and supports volunteer and community resources to enhance the care provided to children, youth and families.
