OTTAWA (ONTARIO), September 5, 2013—The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the CHEO Foundation today proudly unveiled a newly renovated in-patient unit for children and youth at CHEO being treated for cancer, kidney disease, blood disorders and other conditions.
The 4 North unit at CHEO has been given a facelift to make it more child friendly, colourful and welcoming to families, thanks to the generosity of the CHEO Foundation and its donors.
The 4 North unit treats on average 15 patients at a time. CHEO’s patients and their family members often spend many months as inpatients, and even make return visits over a period of years.
Thanks to generous donations from the community through the annual CN Cycle for CHEO and other Foundation activities, the CHEO Foundation contributed $600,000 to the renovations. They include hands-free sinks, updated bathrooms, new blinds and curtains, new family space furniture with lockable storage, new TVs, and respite nooks for parents. A lively new playroom will be completed by the end of the month.
“We want to provide an exceptional experience for every patient and family, and we know that a well designed environment lightens the load for our parents and promotes quality care for our patients,” said Alex Munter, President and CEO of CHEO. “We are pleased that so many parents got involved to make this change happen.”
“The CHEO Foundation was very happy to support this to benefit CHEO’s young patients directly,” said Kevin Keohane, President and CEO, CHEO Foundation. “We know the community wants and expects us to continually improve care for our children and youth. This is a great example of CHEO and the Foundation working together.”
The renovations took ten weeks to complete, and patients were accommodated on an adjoining ward during construction. CHEO is planning for similar facelifts for a number of other inpatient units.
CHEO is a pediatric health and research center providing outstanding family-centered patient care, pioneering breakthrough research, and training the health care professionals of tomorrow.
