32nd CHEO Telethon National Capital Regions breaks another record for CHEO’s kids!
Ottawa, ON. – June 7, 2015 – When the final total of $7,941,063 lit up on the giant tote board just before 7 p.m. the cheering crowd at the E & Y Centre represented a feeling of joy that was felt all over the National Capital Region.
At 7 p.m. on Saturday night, the CHEO Telethon on CTV took to the air and this year’s theme, “Be a SuperHERO for CHEO,” was taken very seriously by the people of the Eastern Ontario, Western Quebec and beyond. By the end of the 24 hour broadcast they had made another clear statement that in their hearts, the real SuperHEROES of our region are the children, youth and families who need CHEO!
The broadcast was a collection of CHEO patient stories, staff and patient interviews, visits with CHEO supporters and volunteers and cheque presentations by donors, companies and community event organizers.
The final dollar total includes money presented to the CHEO Foundation from special fundraising events and activities conducted throughout the year as well as phone and online donations made by viewers during the telethon
“In the weeks leading up to the Telethon, you can feel the excitement building at the Foundation, in the Hospital and throughout the region. And this type of result today, clearly shows how dedicated the people in our community are to the children, youth and families who need CHEO. Every day, people put the lives of their children in the hands of the doctors, nurses, researchers and staff at CHEO. By supporting the Telethon people are helping provide the tools that CHEO’s medical team needs to provide the best health care to each and every child. I can’t thank everyone enough for making the CHEO Telethon such a wonderful success,” said Kevin Keohane, President and CEO of the CHEO Foundation.
Proceeds will help CHEO purchase specialized medical equipment, make much needed renovations within the hospital, and conduct life-saving research in areas such as cancer, youth mental health and childhood obesity. Telethon funds will also help us improve the pediatric nature of the hospital by purchasing games, toys and crafts to make a patient’s stay at CHEO as comfortable as possible.
