CHEO is Canada’s #1 health care employer, says Forbes Magazine
March 1, 2016, OTTAWA — The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), the children's hospital of Canada's capital region, has been ranked number one among health care and social sector employers and number 12 on Forbes’ first ever list of Canada’s Best Employers. CHEO follows closely behind Google, Costco and Mercedes-Benz, as well as several universities found in the top 25.
The Canada’s Best Employers list includes 250 companies and organizations from the private sector, government services, finance, education, telecommunications, health care, and more. Notably, CHEO is ahead of some of the largest employers in the world, including Apple and Microsoft.
To compile the list, Forbes worked closely with Statista, an online statistics provider, and received input from over 8,000 Canadian workers. Those surveyed were asked how likely they were to recommend their employer to someone else, as well as how they felt about other employers in their industry. According to Forbes’ website, the list includes 250 employers across 25 industries, from corporate giants to universities and government agencies, where employees feel at home.
“When I think of what defines CHEO as a workplace, I think about the cleaning staff raising money to buy Christmas gifts for a family that would otherwise have had none. I think about the nurse who stayed well after her shift to comfort a frightened family, the researchers who finally figured out the reason for a little girl’s illness after years of relentless effort, the security guard who gave a hungry child his dinner,” said Alex Munter, President and CEO of CHEO. “We are one team, united behind the mission of helping kids and families be their healthiest. That sense of purpose shapes the culture and makes this a very meaningful place to work.”
CHEO was also recently named one of the National Capital Region’s Top Employers for 2016 for the fourth year in a row, as part of an annual competition organized by MediaCorp Canada Inc. In 2014, CHEO was named one of Canada’s 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures by Waterstone Human Capital. Waterstone singled out CHEO’s patient experience ratings and employee/physician engagement scores, which have routinely been among the highest in Ontario.
