Who We Are

Nurses at CHEO are innovative leaders dedicated to providing exemplary family centered care and to advancing pediatric nursing research and education.

Our nursing leaders include:

Pat Elliott Miller, CNE, VP Patient Services

Pat Elliott-Miller is the Vice-President, Patient Services and Chief Nurse Executive at CHEO, a position she has held since 2003. She has had over 20 years of experience in health care – both in community and hospital settings – in a variety of positions from staff nurse, educator, manager, and senior nurse leader. Throughout her career, Pat has been involved at regional, provincial and national forums addressing professional nursing practice issues. In her commitment to education and research, Pat has been a guest lecturer at the University of Ottawa and a member of the Elizabeth Bruyére Research Institute. Pat is a Wharton Fellow (Nurse Executive Program).

Mary MacNeil, Director Nursing Practice and Education

Mary MacNeil, Director of Nursing Practice & Education has over 20 years of nursing at CHEO. Mary’s holds CNA certification in pediatric critical care, has practiced in various units at CHEO and has also held positions in nursing education, research and quality improvement. She has been a Clinical Instructor at the University of Ottawa and also worked in private industry. Mary has participated in the RNAO Advanced Clinical/Practice Fellowship and has completed the CCI Leadership Program for New & Future Executives. Mary brings a strong commitment to advocating for nurses at point of care, supporting best practice and providing staff with necessary education and support.

Dr. Judy Rashotte, Director Nursing Research and Knowledge Translation Consultant 

Judy Rashotte undertook the position of Director, Nursing Research & Knowledge Transfer Consultant in May 2005. In this role, she promotes the timely dissemination and utilization of paediatric nursing research findings, fosters evidence-based paediatric clinical nursing practice, and develops innovative strategies to advance nursing research at CHEO. Judy’s clinical background includes neonatal, paediatric and adult critical care nursing. In addition, she has held a variety of positions in education and administration. Judy received her PHD in Nursing at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, where she explored the role of the acute care nurse practitioner in Canada. She was the recipient of the Genevieve Gray PhD Medal in Nursing, as well as several educational and research awards, among them, the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship (2003-2005), the RNAO NLN.ON Research Award (2005), the University of Alberta’s Jannetta MacPhail Award (2004-2005) and the Ludmyla Zujewskyj Memorial Scholarship (2003-3004), and the Canadian Nurses Foundation Scholarship Program - Eaton Fellowship (2003). Judy is currently a member of the editorial review board for Dynamics – The Official Journal of the Canadian Association of Critical Care Nurses and reviews manuscripts for such peer reviewed nursing journals as Nursing Philosophy, Canadian Journal of Nursing Research and the Canadian Oncology Nursing Journal. Judy’s research interests include qualitative research methods, nurses’ clinical decision-making, knowledge translation, grief and bereavement as experienced by nurses, and the moral practice of nursing. She is currently involved in several multi-centered research projects including the development of a paediatric psychological distress measurement tool, clinical decision-making related to the use of best practice guidelines and knowledge translation. Judy holds a joint appointment with the School of Nursing, University of Ottawa and is a member of the CHEO Research Institute. Judy is a well published author and internationally known presenter.

Jennifer Carroll - RN, BScN

After a short career as an archaeologist (BSc Archaeology, University of Calgary, 1997), Jen Carroll became a registered nurse in 2008, graduating magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa. She now works on the surgical unit 5East and states she is happier for it. She hopes one day to start her masters in nursing. As the staff nurse representative to the Nursing Research Council, Jen brings a keen interest in research to the team. She is a member of the Canadian Association for Nursing Research and the Stigma Theta Tau Nursing Honour Society. Jen is a published author in anthropology and a nursing article in the CNA’s Canadian Nurse. She is also an accomplished speaker and has presented on various aspects of the Four Points of Balanced Workplace Health at several RNAO conferences.
