Volunteering at CHEO

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at CHEO to support children, youth and families!

CHEO volunteers generously and tirelessly give their time to enhance the services and support that we provide to children, youth and families.

Volunteer activities are assigned, monitored and evaluated by professional CHEO staff and medical staff in areas across the organization, in our many locations.

We recruit periodically throughout the year, to meet the needs of our programs.
To be notified when the application window is open, please subscribe to this page by entering your email in the "Receive Email Updates" field on the bottom left side of this page.

Frequently asked questions

How old do I need to be to apply to volunteer at CHEO?

Applicants must be 16 years old, though many roles require volunteers to be 18 years old.

What are the requirements to volunteer?

  • Complete the e-application form. Your contact information will be kept on file for one year. Many current CHEO volunteers keep their assignment for years, so the need for new recruits varies. You may be invited to attend a group interview.

If you are selected to volunteer at CHEO, you will be required to supply the following documentation, at your own cost:

  • COVID-19 vaccination: Volunteers are required to provide proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Please note that masks are required to be worn at all times while at CHEO.
  • Tuberculosis Testing: A 2-step TB skin test (2 injections, 2 examinations = 4 appointments), completed within the last 12 months. Candidates who test positive must submit the results of a negative chest x-ray report, completed within the last 5 years. A health care provider (family doctor, walk-in clinic, etc.) may assist you with obtaining a TB test. Immunizations: Proof of vaccination dates, or blood test results for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella (Chicken Pox).
  • Police Records Check: CHEO can accept an existing Vulnerable Sector Check completed within the last 6 months at time of interview. Otherwise we will provide instructions on how to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Check or a Judicial Matters Check as a volunteer for CHEO.
  • References: Two professional references (not be family members or peers).

CHEO volunteers do not replace staff, nor provide medical advice. The safety and confidentiality of children, youth and their families is upheld by volunteers, at all times.

I have submitted an application. How long will it take to be contacted and become a registered volunteer?

When an opportunity becomes available that matches your availability and interests, we will contact you to discuss. Many factors are considered when matching volunteers to a role, including your availability, interests and skills and how they match to our current available opportunities.

I often travel during the year. Can I still apply?

Taking a vacation or requiring a leave of absence is acceptable during a volunteer's involvement. Volunteers with an extended absence of eight weeks or more cannot be guaranteed the same role and/or shift upon return.

Can I offer my time for a short-term activity particularly during holidays?

We appreciate your thoughtfulness in considering CHEO. We seek and prioritize individuals who can commit to 8 – 12 months. Due to infection prevention guidelines, patient safety requirements, confidentiality needs, privacy rights, etc. large-scale and one-day volunteer-specific events or visits cannot be accommodated.

Can my child volunteer with me?

No, only the person who is registered as a CHEO volunteer can occupy a shift. Friends, children, etc. are not eligible to accompany volunteer's onsite. If they are 16 years of age or older, they are welcome to apply through our normal application process.

I would like to bring my animal to visit the patients. Can this be arranged?

CHEO offers an Animal-Assisted Therapy program in partnership with Ottawa Therapy Dogs. Please contact Ottawa Therapy Dogs for more information.

I am a grade 11 or 12 high school student. Do you accept co-op placements?

We're not currently able to accept co-op placements. Co-op placements are coordinated by your school.

Are job shadow opportunities available?

Volunteer Resources does not offer job shadow opportunities.

My friend works at CHEO. Can I volunteer in their department?

Volunteers are placed based on the needs of the programs we support. We cannot guarantee a specific placement.

What is the dress code for volunteers?

Volunteers are ambassadors for the hospital and how they dress reflects on the hospital. An ID badge and vest are issued to all volunteers.

What are some of the added benefits to volunteering at CHEO?

  • Complimentary parking while on shift, only after your role has been assigned
  • Access to lockers and a volunteer lounge (including microwave, fridge)
  • Orientation manual, including safety briefings
  • Garment that clearly indicates “volunteer” must be worn onsite
  • Photo ID badge
  • Communications, promotions, recognition and social events
  • Enhancing the patient experience!
