Anesthesia residents affiliated with the University of Ottawa, Queen’s University and from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine regularly rotate through the Department.
Residents are expected to present at the Department Grand Rounds (Wednesday) and also encouraged to do small research and review projects.
Staff closely mentor the Residents through their rotations at CHEO and this helps the residents to nurture both their clinical skills and knowledge.

We offer a one-year Clinical Fellowship for those considering a subspecialty career or academic career. The fellowship has been offered for many years and has attracted fellows from all over the world. We provide an advanced clinical exposure to Pediatric Anesthesia prior to undergoing a mixed adult/pediatric or sole pediatric anesthesia practice. Opportunities to participate in research and scholarly activities are available.

About CHEO
CHEO is a tertiary care pediatric health care institute serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. Since its opening in 1974, the hospital has provided specialized pediatric heath to children, youth and their families in English and French. Today, it is estimated that the hospital sees over 6500 admissions and 180,000 outpatient visits per year. CHEO is one of the largest providers of mental health services in Ontario for youth and their families.
The mental health program provides a broad range of services in schools and the community as well as day treatment programs and inpatient care. The hospital is also the regional center for developmental and rehabilitation services. CHEO is part of a large modern health science complex affiliated with the University of Ottawa.
The hospital has major responsibilities for clinical teaching and research in a number of disciplines. Since 2004, the hospital has led the provincial, Knowledge institute on child and youth mental health and addictions; which is responsible for the promotion of evidence-informed service planning and delivery. The hospital is also associated with the CHEO Research Institute that has an international reputation for excellence in basic and applied research in children’s health.
About the Clinical Psychology Residency Program
CHEO offers a pre-doctoral residency for students enrolled in a Ph.D. program in either clinical psychology or clinical neuropsychology. Our residency has been accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association since 1990. The training program can accommodate both English speaking and bilingual (French-English speaking) residents.
The training program provides residents with a range of rich training experiences through active clinical work, intensive supervision, small group seminars, a program evaluation project, hospital specialty rounds and interaction with other health professionals. By the end of the residency, all of our trainees will have developed the skills needed to become registered as a clinical child and adolescent psychologist in any jurisdiction in Canada or to move onto postdoctoral training. Trainees in the neuropsychology stream can also become registered as child neuropsychologists.
The focus of the program is on teaching advanced clinical skills in assessment, treatment and consultation. Residents are exposed to different supervisors, a variety of treatment models and a broad range of child clinical, health and developmental conditions over the course of the training year
Clinical Psychospiritual Education (CPE)
With a vision to provide the best life for every child and youth, CHEO provides a rich learning environment for students to explore and engage in value-based education.
The Spiritual Care Program – in partnership with different universities of Canada – is training the next generation of spiritual care professionals. These Clinical Psychospiritual Education units are accredited by the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC).
Learning is designed to be transferable to various contexts: parish ministry, clinical practice for health-care professionals, military and prison chaplaincy, preparation for certification as a Spiritual Care Practitioner by CASC, and for applying to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
Special features of CHEO’s CPE program include:
Opportunity to partner with other Canadian universities either in a Master’s in Psychotherapy and Spirituality program, a diploma in Theology, or as a special intern.
A unique learning environment and experience, focused on experiential learning
Use of spiritual care assessment tools which are integrated into the patient’s electronic health record.
Currently, the only opportunity to complete CPE in a pediatric context in Canada
1. Undergraduate or graduate degree with prerequisite courses in:

3. Intern must submit the application form.
4. Three letters of reference highlighting your openness to learning and to all faith traditions; why you would be a good candidate for a CPE unit and your potential for being an effective spiritual care provider. Please ask referees to send letters directly to spiritualcare@cheo.on.ca
5. Application package with above documentation needs to be received before the deadline.
6. When application is complete (it is your responsibility to see that all requirements are submitted), the CPE super- visor-educator will send you a conditional notice of acceptance, pending a satisfactory interview.
7. Interview will be done by a Supervisor-Educator. The interview will determine maturity, readiness, emotional integrity and openness to learning.
