Radiation Safety at CHEO
At CHEO, we prioritize your child’s safety in every aspect of their care — including medical imaging. Based on the latest evidence and advancements in radiology, we’ve removed the use of lead shielding during imaging procedures, as it does not reduce radiation exposure and can interfere with image quality. The only exception is thyroid shielding, which is still used in our dental clinic.
Why we removed lead shielding:
- Modern Technology: Advances in imaging technology have significantly reduced radiation exposure.
- Proven safety: Research shows that shielding does not provide additional protection.
- Clearer images: Shielding can obscure important anatomy.
- Faster, more accurate results: Without shields interfering with images, diagnoses can be made more quickly and with greater accuracy.
We are committed to transparency and patient safety. This policy update ensures we continue to provide the best care for children and youth.
