IR Cath and Sim biplane

In January 2020 CHEO broke ground on a project to revamp our catheterization (cath) and interventional radiology (IR) labs and build a new state-of-the-art simulation (Sim) lab for medical learners – spaces that will support some of CHEO’s sickest children and youth and provide medical learners with a risk-free training environment.

After months of demolition, we’re excited towelcome some of the new tech that will bring these labs to life! We want to give you a breakdown of some of the equipment we’re most excited about:

biplane
Siemens Artis Q Zen Biplane

The Siemens Artis Q Zen Biplane is a 3D imaging machine. It helps guide doctors diagnose and treat a variety of conditions.

 Who is it for?
  • The machine will be used to help children and youth who need to be diagnosed or treated for conditions involving the brain, heart and other important organs.

  • This machine will be used for things like inserting feeding tubes, performing biopsies and getting a clear picture of a child’s internal structures, to name a few.

How will it improve safety?

  • It reduces traditional radiation exposure to staff and patients by 60%. This is especially important during longer procedures where children and youth would be exposed to more radiation.

  • Doctors’ ability to see the small devices needed to repair children and youth’s hearts is improved by 70%

  • Because the machine is a biplane system, it has two rotating cameras instead of just one.  This means doctors get really clear, 3D portraits to help them diagnose and treat children and youth.

  • The screen displays allow for multiple views, and the layout can be changed on the spot. This means extra screens aren’t needed and there will be more space and less tripping hazards.

  • Better imaging means procedures will take less time – this is especially important for children and youth under anesthesia.

How will it ensure faster access?

  • Because of the 3D technology children and youth will no longer have to travel offsite for treatments for conditions affecting blood supply to the brain and spinal cord.

  • The new 3D technology means that procedures will take less time since doctors will have a clearer picture and be able to diagnose and treat them more quickly.

2bin
Tecsys 2Bin

These are high-tech “filing cabinets” that will help organize and manage the large inventory of items required by Cardiology Catheterization services and Interventional Radiology services at CHEO.

 Who is it for?
This system will be used by CHEO clinical staff.
 How will it improve safety?
  • Each inventory item will be carefully stored so it does not get damaged. Catheters for example are very expensive and delicate.

  • CHEO will order and store supplies in a wide range of pediatric sizes  – something that adult hospitals would not have for a smaller patient.

How will it ensure faster access?
  • Each cabinet is equipped with a smart panel that allows for real-time inventory tracking and automated re-ordering of supplies so we  have what we need to perform procedures at any time.

  • The items are displayed clearly, making it easy to locate and select the appropriate piece of equipment as it is needed.

medrad
Medrad Mark 7 Arterion Injection System

This machine is used to inject contrast into a patient's blood system so clinicians can get a better view of blood vessels.

 Who is it for?
This machine is used by medical staff performing procedures where they need to inject contrast dye to get abetter view of a child or youth’s blood vessels.
 How will it improve safety?
  • The contrast is delivered in precise dose at the precise time, and it can also be controlled remotely by a panel.
How will it ensure faster access?
  •  The new injector is lighter, easier to handle and has a touchscreen. The injector is mounted on the table, close to the patient.
boom
Independant® 101 KLS Anesthesia Ceiling Boom

This piece of equipment is mounted to the ceiling and provides medical gas and other connections to the anesthesia gas machine, without the need to use long cable and hoses.

 Who is it for?
This equipment is used by anesthesiologists when children and youth need to be put to sleep for certain interventional radiology or cardiac catheterization procedures
 How will it improve safety?
  • Because this is mounted on the ceiling there is no need to use long cables and hoses to connect medical gas. This will reduce staff injury due to potential tripping overhead hazards.
How will it ensure faster access?
  •  A clutter free set up means staff will save time during set up and room turn over saving time throughout the day to see more patients.
smots
SMOTS UK

SMOTS is an audiovisual debriefing system that allows medical learners to live stream and record simulations as well as offer instant playback for video debriefing.

 Who is it for?
This piece of equipment is used by CHEO's SIM faculty, staff and medical staff when they want to watch, record or stream a simulation.
 How will it improve safety?
  • SMOTS will improve safety because it lets us stream risk-free simulations to a wider group of CHEO staff and medical staff, enhancing learning and skills to those not physically at CHEO.
  • We’ll be able to take part in local and global health care simulation research as we will be able to easily store and share recordings for research analysis.

How will it ensure faster access?
  • Because sessions can be recorded, saved and viewed at a different time, anywhere around the world, we will be able to create patient and caregiver teaching videos. This is especially useful for patients with complex needs like tracheostomies.

  • It will also allow us to stream to patients and caregivers during a simulation or skills session to review skills with them in real time.

Thank you donors

Funds for this project were made possible, in part, by a generous $2 million donation from CP and the 2017 CP Women’s Open through the CHEO Foundation.

The CHEO Foundation raises funds to support the work of CHEO, the CHEO Research Institute and Roger Neilson House and helps children and youth to live their best lives.
