During the COVID-19 pandemic, CHEO will be performing telehealth visits. An important part of an eye examination is measuring vision — how well your child can see on an eye chart.

Before your telehealth appointment please check and record your child’s vision in their right eye and their left eye.

General instructions

  1. Practice first.  For younger children, stand close to your child and practice using both eyes together before trying to measure the vision with one eye at a time.  Make sure they understand the “game” before you start.
  2. If they have glasses, please ensure they are wearing them during the test.
  3. Be positive.  Do not give your child any hints, but encourage them to do their best.  Don’t let them give up early.
  4. No peeking!  Make sure your child’s eye is completely covered with a patch or the palm of your hand. Watch out for peeking.
  5. To accurately check vision, you will be required to test vision from exactly 10 feet away fromyour child’s eyes. You can measure 10 feet (3 metres) using any of the following:
  • tape measure
  • “Measure” app on iOS or Android
  • lay 11 printer pages (8.5” x 11”) end to end
