With shorter days and less sunlight during the winter, many kids don’t get enough vitamin D, which is an important nutrient for growing bones and healthy immune function.
But with the Family Day forecast showing above‑zero weather, it’s a great opportunity to get outside as a family and soak up some natural Vitamin D from the sun - every little bit helps!
Here are the top 3 things to know to help your child get the vitamin D they need during the winter:
Tip #1: Food is a great source of vitamin D
To boost vitamin D intake, include two or more cups of milk or plant‑based beverages each day, plus at least two servings of fish per week.
Tip #2: Supplements can help
If you’re concerned that your child isn’t getting enough, adding a vitamin D supplement is an easy way to fill the gap. Children should get at least 600 International Units of vitamin D per day from food and supplements combined.
Tip #3: Babies also need daily vitamin D
All infants under one year of age should take a vitamin D supplement of at least 400 International Units daily.
