OTTAWA – Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2019, published today by Research Infosource, ranks the CHEO Research Institute 25th nationally and 10th provincially, based on its research income of more than $24M in 2018.

Release: Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals 2019

“I’m very proud of our ranking, but it’s just one benchmark of success. What really motivates us is the impact of our research for patients and their families,” said Dr. Jason Berman, CEO and Scientific Director of the CHEO Research Institute, Vice-President of Research at CHEO and pediatric oncologist. “In the coming years, we will continue to increase our research productivity to realize our full potential.”

Last year, CHEO’s research involved 75,000 children, youth and families last year, and included rare diseases discovered, ground-breaking mental health work, new therapies for childhood cancer and genomic innovation.

“CHEO has established a solid foundation for research to complement its clinical prowess,” said Ron Freedman, CEO, Research Infosource Inc.

The report highlights that Ontario’s hospitals, with 19 in the top 40, are leaders in health research investment — a key indicator in defining the province as a competitive centre of health research and innovation, both nationally and globally.

CHEO researchers compete for public funding to fuel more than 600 current studies across the hospital. They also rely on community donations; every dollar donated to research at CHEO is leveraged four times by granting organizations.
