OTTAWA, ON — Everyone at CHEO today is mourning the loss of Ruth Cull, who for more than two decades brought joy and laughter to thousands of children and families as Molly Penny, the hospital's beloved therapeutic clown. Ruth passed away on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
Ruth Cull, a longtime member of the CHEO family, began her career as an operating room nurse at the hospital. A clowning workshop inspired her to take on a second career as Molly Penny, a role she embraced with an infectious smile, quick wit, and enormous heart. As Molly Penny, she provided support to families during some of their most difficult moments, earning a reputation as a "lifeline of laughter and hope."
“Ruth played a really important role at CHEO, and the tremendous, positive impact she had is clear in the widespread response to her passing,” said Dr. Vera Etches, President and CEO at CHEO. “When children come to CHEO, whether for a quick visit or a longer stay, it can be a challenging journey. But Ruth was always there to help children along that journey and bring a smile to their face. Her legacy will not be forgotten, and everyone at CHEO is wishing her family well.”
Molly Penny retired from her position in September 2022, but her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched. Her family shared that Molly brought joy to thousands of children and families during difficult times. She was known for handing out "brown Es," chairing "Bored" meetings, and being a compassionate presence for both children and their parents.
Ruth Cull's unwavering commitment to bringing smiles to the faces of others will be deeply missed by everyone.
