The holiday season is a time filled with traditions, celebrations, and gatherings, but for those spending December at CHEO, the experience can feel very different.
While celebrating the holidays in hospital may not be every child’s first choice, for many it’s a necessity. That’s where CHEO’s Child Life team steps in to make the season as special and comforting as possible.
Child Life specialists play a vital role in helping children, youth, and families cope with the stress and uncertainty of illness, injury, or hospitalization.
Through play—a cornerstone of their approach—they assess, teach, prepare, and support patients throughout their health-care journey. They normalize the hospital experience, offer reassurance, actively listen, and provide education about available resources and services.
During the holidays, this commitment shines even brighter. Working closely with the CHEO Foundation, Child Life organizes a series of festive events designed to bring joy and a sense of normalcy to patients and families. These include holiday-themed crafts, virtual visits with Santa, and taking part in decorating patient units to create a warm, cheerful atmosphere.
Special guests like the Ottawa Senators, Atlético Ottawa, and even Ottawa firefighters—who arrive as “repelling elves”— add excitement and smiles. Musical performances from the National Arts Centre Orchestra and themed celebration days further enhance the festive spirit.
“Being in the hospital during the holidays can be tough for kids and families,” says Child Life Specialist Lisa O’Kane, who helps organize special events.
“Our goal is to bring joy, comfort, and a sense of celebration to every child’s stay. We want them to feel included and know that the magic of the season is still alive here at CHEO.”
The Child Life team also works to ensure all families feel included by honouring diverse traditions and religious observances. Their efforts show that even in challenging times, the holidays can still be magical thanks to the compassion and creativity of those dedicated to making every child’s stay at CHEO a little brighter.
