Melanie
Meet Melanie Laffin Thibodeau, Project Manager - Inpatient Medicine and IMCU, CHEOWorks

Melanie’s connection to CHEO started 20 years ago when her nephew was born with multiple complications. The CHEO team took him under their wing and began treatment including a complicated surgery on his liver. Melanie gave her nephew one of the greatest gifts – a liver transplant, which was done at SickKids in Toronto. He went on to receive regular checkups from CHEO for several years. This was just the start of his CHEO journey – and Melanie would eventually begin her own CHEO several years later.

Fast forward 20 years, Melanie was ready for children of her own. After trying to conceive for more than seven years, Melanie and her husband were thrilled when they became pregnant. Unfortunately, prenatal genetic testing revealed that their baby was facing multiple health complications.

CHEO’s genetics team ended up following Melanie throughout her pregnancy. Melanie shares how the “genetics team at CHEO counselled and walked us through what we should expect.” While they sadly lost their baby, Melanie highlights the special care they received, “The compassion the genetics team showed us, and the strength they provided us as we were going through a hard time, was extraordinary. I referred to the resources they provided daily during the first few months of our loss.” Down the road, the guidance she received also enabled Melanie to support another mother facing a similar journey. Thankfully, Melanie and her husband now have two healthy daughters.

Thanks to her personal experiences, and her long history of working in the world of pediatrics, she knew where she wanted to be – CHEO. Melanie shares, “Seeing how the organization was always so involved with my family for well over 20 years, I knew I wanted to be a part of the team.” And today, she is! Reflecting on her road to CHEO, Melanie shares how CHEO has always held a special place in her heart, not only for all the amazing care provided to children and youth but also for the unwavering support, reassurance and kindness provided to parents and families, “It leaves a lasting impression and offers tremendous comfort to families like ours.”
