The time change is hard on everyone, but kids can have an especially difficult time adjusting when the clocks fall back and spring ahead one hour.
There are some things you can do to support your child or youth before and after the time change to help soften the impact.
Jean Philippe Chaput, researcher with the CHEO Research Institute, shares these five tips:
-
Shift your sleep and wake times 15 minutes earlier in the spring, later in the fall.
-
Adjust your routines in the days leading up to the time change to match the new schedule.
-
Set the clock to the “new” time on Saturday but go to bed at a normal time.
-
Minimize light exposure on Sunday morning until the targeted wake time.
-
Get a good sleep Sunday night after the time change.
