What is an ingrown toenail?
An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the toenail grows into the skin. This can cause pain, redness and swelling. You can treat it at home to feel better and help the nail grow right.
Soaking the foot
- How often: 2-3 times a day
- How: Soak the foot in warm water with Epsom salt (1 tablespoon per litre)
- How long: 15-20 minutes
- Why: Softens the skin and nail, reduces swelling, and eases pain
Lifting the nail and skin
- After soaking, gently push the softened skin to the side to reduce pressure on the nail.
- Lift the nail slightly using a clean Q-tip, popsicle stick, or dental floss. Place a small piece of cotton under the nail edge to keep it lifted.
Toenail care
- Trim straight across and avoid rounding the corners.
- Do not cut toenails too short.
- Do not pull or rip off the toenail.
- Do not dig into the sides of the nail, as this can make it worse.
Choosing the right footwear
- Wear loose-fitting shoes or open-toed sandals to reduce pressure.
- Avoid tight shoes and socks that can make the condition worse.
Pain relief
- Use over-the-counter pain medication as needed (Acetaminophen/Tylenol or Ibuprofen/Advil).
- Follow dosage instructions based on age and weight.
Applying antibiotic ointment
- Only if pus or fluid is forming, apply a thin layer of over-the-counter antibiotic ointment (e.g., Polysporin) after soaking and drying the foot to prevent infection.

See your family doctor or nearest medical provider if you notice any of the following:
