Ashley Killeen is passionate about transforming care, one step at time

Posted on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 09:24 AM

Meet Ashley Killeen, Program Manager for 1Door4Care

When Ashley started as a volunteer at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre (OCTC) in 2007 (OCTC eventually amalgamated with CHEO in 2016), she heard whispers of a new building being planned to further support children and youth. Years later, CHEO is bringing this vision to life. The new CHEO integrated treatment centre, also known as 1Door4Care, will be completed in 2028. And today, Ashley is the Program Manager for this project – a full...

Claire Dawe-McCord. She has blonde hair and red scrubs.

Welcome back, Claire

Posted on Friday, April 19, 2024 07:00 AM

From CHEO patient to CHEO volunteer to CHEO medical student, Claire Dawe-McCord has done it all.

By the time she was 16, Claire had spent more time at CHEO than most other children her age. At the end of 2015, Claire’s sickness peaked – her liver and kidney were failing, and she spent several weeks in ICU. While the odds were challenging, Claire made a complete recovery.

Major sense of pride in expanding CHEO

Posted on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 09:00 AM

Peter Roberts arrives at the Smyth Road campus of CHEO committed to keeping everyone safe, and he’s rarely felt such a sense of pride in a construction project.

Roberts, superintendent of operations at EllisDon, oversees a 26-member team that’s building the new parking garage at CHEO. Once complete, the team will then start on 1Door4Care, CHEO’s new integrated treatment centre.

Roberts is responsible for ensuring the safety of workers and the public on and around the work site, and he specifically asked to be part of this major...

David Murphy, director of mental health, reflects on how change can lead to better patient care

Posted on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 08:49 AM

Meet David Murphy, Director of Mental Health at CHEO

David (Dave) Murphy has been an intrinsic part of CHEO’s Mental Health department for over 25 years. “I knew at an early age that I wanted to work with kids and youth,” says Dave. When an opportunity presented itself to come work at CHEO, Dave jumped on it. He started as a Child and Youth Counselor in the inpatient psychiatric unit in 1996 and never looked back.

Reflecting on his decades at CHEO, Dave shares with a laugh, “We’ve gotten bigger!”...

Cameron's first words

Posted on Thursday, April 11, 2024 09:10 AM

When Emily’s son Cameron reached eighteen months of age, he had not said his first word. At that age, the recommended milestone is twenty words. Concerned that there might be a communication difficulty, Emily brought him to their family doctor. The doctor recommended First Words, the Preschool Speech and Language Program of Ottawa and Renfrew County.

A partner of CHEO, First Words offers free and bilingual services to families of preschool children (from birth to entry to junior kindergarten) in...
