About the new CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre

The new CHEO Integrated Treatment Centre (ITC) is not only a building; it is a new way to deliver care for children and youth with complex medical, developmental, behavioural and mental health needs. As such, we are building a new, integrated model of care, that is both personalized and connected to the needs of every child, youth and family.

The new six-storey building will be located on CHEO's campus at 401 Smyth Road.

This new facility and model of care will be a cornerstone of our commitment to providing world-class health care for children and youth, ensuring that they receive the support they need to thrive. It’s a key part of our ambitious 10-year plan to transform our Smyth Road campus to better meet the needs of children and youth today and in the future.

The dream began over 15 years ago as we recognized the challenges faced by families with children and youth with complex needs. CHEO wanted to create a facility that provides everything families need in a centralized location and connects these programs and services together, so families receive integrated, seamless care.

What you can expect in the new building

Inspired by Indigenous Peoples’ connection to the land, the new building will incorporate elements of nature such as native plants in the landscaping and biophilic design representing flora and fauna from the Algonquin lands.

Connected by a link to the main hospital building, some of the highlights of this 220,000-square-foot building will include:
  • Enhanced clinical space

  • Two therapy gyms

  • Expanded outpatient mental health clinics

  • Indoor and outdoor multi-use clinic and therapy space

  • Spaces for children and youth with complex emotional needs

  • Innovative research space

  • Motion and technology lab (TEK Lab)

  • Digitally supported treatment rooms

  • Customized spaces

  • Accessible workspaces, teaching kitchens and outdoor terraces

  • Rest areas every 30 metres, inside and outside

  • Advanced technology to enable virtual care

  • Inclusive & natural spaces

  • Family support and community spaces

  • Multi-faith spaces, including gathering areas for smudging ceremonies and drumming

  • Biophilic design — reflecting the inherent human tendency to connect with nature and other living things — using natural patterns, shapes and forms, light, and space

  • Environmentally friendly

  • Certified LEED Silver facility with additional sustainability features so CHEO can be a leader in helping Canada achieve net zero emissions by 2050

  • A new parking structure, including a fully accessible first level and 20 EV charging stations

Expected to be completed in 2028, the ITC will use a family-centred approach to care through a new model co-created by clinicians, patients, families and caregivers

Following an extensive procurement process, EllisDon was selected and began construction on the 220,000-square-foot building in spring 2025.

This multi-year project funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services is a collaboration between CHEO and Infrastructure Ontario.

How care will be transformed for kids with complex needs

By breaking barriers between specialties, CHEO care teams can collaborate more effectively. This will lead to earlier interventions and smoother transitions between services, which will ultimately improve health outcomes for patients at CHEO.

For children, youth and families, this means easier access to care and advanced therapies, as well as customized spaces to optimize each child’s mobility and safety considerations.

The new building and model of care will also enable further innovation and new discoveries with researchers, in partnership with front-line care teams.

Throughout the project, we are partnering with the ITC Family Advisory Committee, children, youth and families, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis partners, staff and medical staff, and government representatives at the municipal, provincial and federal levels, to ensure the building, spaces and care are welcoming and inclusive for everyone.

Here are a few examples of how we are achieving this

  • Indigenous community feedback: With the intent to build ongoing respectful relationships with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis community leaders, representatives from CHEO continue to partner closely with the Ottawa Aboriginal Coalition in Ottawa, as well as Kitigan Zibi and Pikwakanagan First Nations.
  • The Family Advisory Committee (FAC) consists of a group of individuals and community partners that provide guidance, recommendations, and feedback to CHEO. Learn more about the FAC.
